Introduction: Cultural Constructions of Race and Racism in the Middle East and North Africa / Southwest Asia and North Africa

In recent years, scholars in the fields of cultural studies, American history, ethnic and Middle East area studies have approached questions race racism this geographic region with renewed critical vigor. Recent work deconstructing anti-Arab Islamophobia Americas Europe has put these patterns discrimination into intersectional conversation anti-Black anti-Indigenous racism. New historical efforts drawn attention to legacies slavery Ottoman, Persian, Arab Empires, working understand how forms racialization racial hierarchization predated were exacerbated by arrival European imperial forces. At same time, activists draw prevailing against migrant laborers, marginalized indigenous populations, others as afterlives colonialism, war, austerity, revolution carry on.
